Umami Burger

Let’s get two things out of the way up front. One, I know it’s be awhile. Two, I know this topic is a bit obvious. But hey, there is a reason why people talk, right?

Umami burger just started its second week up north in San Francisco after making a juicy name for itself in L.A.. I had heard the rumors and was intrigued, but held firm that Roam, the burger joint sent from heaven that lived across the street from Umami Burger, was my one true love. My short affair with Umami Burger was just so I would be able to hold a conversation with the fellow Union Street-goers. Yet, after waiting 30 minutes to get seated and then smelling meat, butter and cheese with a hint of tater-tots, I knew this was more than an affair. I was cheating on Roam.

The Cali Burger, which included roasted tomatoes, house made American cheese, butter lettuce, caramelized onions and Russian dressing was essentially to die for. So much so that it may, in fact, kill me. While the meat really was melt in your mouth good, the bun, a mix of egg bread, Challah and the butter soaked loaves that you get at Fuddruckers, made the burger one of the best I have ever had.

It was over the burgers, the beer batter onion rings and the secret cheesy tots that my dinner-mates discussed every detail of our meal and the words , “we should write a food blog” came out of my mouth. I then realized, oh wait, I do have one. A poor neglected one. So while I love Roam, and will continue to be a regular, it will always be the Umami Burger that brought me to bed and forced me to write about food.
